Etisalat plans ‘5G’ launch in September

Etisalat of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) says it is planning to launch 5G services in September this year. The telco says services will initially be available in fixed-wireless mode via a home or office modem, with coverage limited to a select handful of locations.

While international standards for 5G have still to be fully ratified, a number of operators around the world are pushing ahead with mobile network upgrades to improve data speeds and reduce latency. Etisalat has previously announced trials of 5G technology which it says achieved download rates of up to 71Gbps. The firm claims 5G will enable customers to enjoy uninterrupted 4K video streaming, augmented reality and virtual reality services, and autonomous transport.
